How to Quiet Your Inner Critic, Tip #1: The Disarm

by Jenna on June 3, 2010

In this quick video, you’ll see and hear my first tip (four total) on how to quiet your inner critic so you can stop holding back on your soul’s mission. Our inner critics are insidious and sneaky creatures, and this video will give you a powerful and simple first step to changing your relationship with your inner dialogue.

Oh, and don’t forget to watch to the end so you can see the bloopers too. :)

Beautiful, Jenna! And the bloopers are so endearing. What a smart way to quiet inner critics by having fun with them! (Take that, perfectionism!)

P.S. You reminded me so much of Meryl Streep here (who I adore, btw).

Nice Jenna! I enjoyed the tip to slow down the inner critic as well as the bloppers! One of the regulars at my Los Angeles HSP Meetup brought a little video camera and set it on the table and recorded the last one because so many HSP have the intention of going to the Meetup but for one of a million reasons don’t show up… at least not right away. And so many people have asked about what goes on at the HSP Meetup that to put together a little video seems to make sense. I’m not sure I’ll include any blooper, though! All the best to you!

@Jim – Thanks so much for your wishes! I appreciate it. Also, I’m intrigued/inspired by your comments about your HSP MeetUp. Like you, I’ve also found it can take HSPs several months of just watching/observing online activity before they actuallycome to an in-person event. (And most attend regularly thereafter.) But what I’m surprised to hear is that the majority of your group is willing to be videotaped, and then allow that video to be shared publicly on the MeetUp site. It’s quite an accomplishment when I can just get a still-shot photo taken of everyone, as they usually state their preference for privacy! :-) So bravo to you, Jim, for creating what must be a very safe, high-trust atmosphere.

@Jenna – Your videos help model the courage to be seen which, I believe, is of extreme importance to HSPs. Looking forward to the call!

Love,
Erika

Jenna,

awesome on the bloopers. why do we all pretend to be perfect? that’s what the inner critic wants so we never get going.

great! Giulietta

Lovely Jenna, I love your videos and getting to see and hear you; it’s so cool!

It’s a great tip – how can we do anything about our critic’s voices if we don’t even hear it! You’re so right.

Love the bloopers – can we have more of those please…?

Love,
Angela :)

Hi Jenna,

‘Slowing down’… oh yes. In many situations when I slow down I have the opportunity to start facing the fear. Clearly, fear would prefer that I continue distracting myself, fear doesn’t enjoy being stared at it seems! Slowing down i would say is the first, but courageous step towards looking at the ‘ dark’ thoughts. If you can’t see your thoughts, then your master (mind) is taking you for a walk…

I so liked seeing the bits at the end…

Hey everyone, I’m so glad you enjoyed this video, it was so fun to make. And I just keep laughing and laughing about the bloopers. They make me so happy!

Erika, thank you for your comment about the courage to be seen. That is something I step up to more and more and more. Thank you for seeing that. :)

Giulietta, YES! Pretending to be perfect is so boring and stifling. Perfectionism is way overrated but so common. My family specializes in it. Weird, since we are soooo not perfect. :)

Joe, Angela, Mary, thank you so much for commenting. :)

Christophe, Fear is the deeper undercurrent here, isn’t it? And our critics are working hard to keep fear, and risking the outcomes that we fear, at bay. Slowing down is a HUGELY courageous step that many of us never take. Thanks for pointing that out.

Warmly,
Jenna

Jenna, as always, your information is to the point and USEFUL! And like another viewer, I couldn’t help but think how much you bear resemblance to the esteemed Meryl Streep!
