Comments, Thoughts & Ideas
Fourth TeleGathering
February 19, 2004

Following you will find a summary of participants' comments, thoughts and ideas from the February 2004 TeleGathering for Highly Sensitive Souls.  These comments were made in response to the inquiry:  "How have you embraced, supported & balanced your empathic ability to experience the energy & emotions of others?"

At this lovely, small gathering we focused a great deal of attention on self care and the powerful role it plays for each of us in managing our empathy.  We also talked about techniques for self protection and energy management, many of which I've briefly summarized below.

Thoughts on Ways to Embrace & Balance Empathy

  • Celebrate and Develop Your Gift!  Study what you can about empathy and how it works (see "Resources," below).  Develop your own techniques and practices to support yourself.
  • Practice Extreme Self Care.  This includes taking time in nature and eating well.
  • Establish Clear Emotional and Energetic Boundaries.  Be willing to say no.  One participant mentioned that she has made a declaration that she "takes on and works on only her own stuff."
  • Create Protective Boundaries.  Use visualization to create protective energetic boundaries, such as a wall of fluffy heirloom roses to filter out negative energy.
  • Ground Yourself.  Practice grounding techniques, such as imagining a golden circle of light going through all your chakras, or extending a grounding cord to the center of the earth from your first chakra.  Regular bodywork and exercise help both with grounding and with maintaining a sense of self and boundaries.
  • Clear Your Aura Regularly.  Use visualization to clear your aura or use a shower clearing technique, such as imagining that the shower water is pure Universal energy or a healing waterfall washing any negative energy down the drain.
  • Practice Mantras.  John Edward (psychic medium from Crossing Over) uses this mantra to prepare himself and in times of crisis:  "I encircle myself with the white light of love and divine protection.  I allow only positive thoughts and energy to affect me.  I will not be influenced by the negativity of those around me."
  • Get Support.  Connect with others who deal with similar concerns.  One participant asks her soul and spirit to help her work with and open to the appropriate level of energy in any given situation.
  • Disconnect from Others. One way to do this is to imagine that as you part ways, you can gently disconnect a cord that connects your heart to your friend’s heart. These energetic cords occur naturally as you meet with someone, and yet can be draining when left in place.  One participant mentioned that she sends appreciation to herself and others and takes back her energy when she leaves, and holds the intention to release the others back to their own journeys.
  • Learn About Supportive Tools.  Flower essences are great for empaths (see www.kyramesich.com), as are essential oils.  You can use Florida water (vodka with lemon and grapefruit essential oils) to spray in your physical space and aura to clear it.  Rose oil and Epsom salt baths are excellent for rebalancing empathy.
