Here Are Four Simple Steps
to Get Started
Quieting Your Inner Critic
Here are a few things I want you to know how to do:
 |
1st: SLOOOOW your inner conversation down. One of the challenges of quieting your inner critic is that the messages can start coming fast and furious. If you slow it down, you can start to make choices about what you want to be telling yourself.

2nd: EXAMINE what you're telling yourself for accuracy. Is it TRUE? So often our inner dialogue simply isn't true. It's filled with fallacious assumptions, outdated beliefs, and old stories about ourselves that keep us stuck in our old ruts. Taking the time to examine what your telling yourself is critical to unraveling it.

3rd: Craft an accurate, alternative, believable replacement message. The next step is to craft a simple statement that you can use to replace the one you're telling yourself.
Warning: This is NOT the same as an affirmation that sounds good but doesn't work in the difficult moments. I'm an expert at helping my client's craft believable statements they can use to support themselves.

4th: Don't let your inner critic STOP you. This sounds simple, but it's a huge profound step. So many of us listen to that voice of our inner critic as if it is Truth and act accordingly. This is a huge mistake.

And There's More...
In my work helping my clients overcome their negative messages, what I've seen is that there are a number of different types of messages from our inner critics, and knowing how to handle each one makes the whole process waaaaaay more manageable.
I've developed a method and strategy for dealing with each one of these types of inner critic messages so you'll know just how to stop them in their tracks.
Usually our inner dialogue is a combination of the following:
- Bad questions that keep our subconscious minds hard at work generating -- yeah, you guessed it -- bad answers.
- Old stories and assumptions about who we are and what we're capable of that keep us playing small.
- Hidden shoulds that lurk around the recesses of our minds and keep us prioritizing other people's needs instead of our own powerful visions and creations.
- Projections of our darkness and our light onto other people that keep us stuck in self-doubt, comparison, negativity, and judgment. Ouch.

But Jenna, what about
the Law of Attraction?
At this point you may be wondering about whether or not you want to "focus on the negative" by participating in a class like this. There's a school of thought that says we should only focus our energy and attention on "the positive."
I LOVE that perspective, AND, what I've found is that for many, many people, all that does is force us to bury our fears, doubts, and negative thoughts even more, and struggle to repress them even more.
Honestly, that doesn't do any of us any good, and in my experience with my clients, it only makes those voices louder.
(And by the way, all that does is simply attract MORE of what ISN'T working.)
So what I do is create a safe, sacred space where together we can look those voices of darkness right in the eye and transform them into something that can actually support you.
The bottom line is that acceptance of your inner "darkness" is the key to transformation, not repression.
You DO Have to Work On Your Mindset
On the other hand, you also have to work on your mindset -- in order to be successful, you have to have an inner philosophy about life that enables you to be open to creative possibilities and solutions.
I've found that having a supportive mindset is comprised of these key elements:
- An understanding of your smokescreens, which are the cover up behaviors that mask your deeper, hidden fears.
Your fears and associated smokescreens are usually specific to your particular life lesson (the repeating challenge you bump into over and over and over again in your life).
Once you understand your own smokescreen behaviors, you're more able to see through them for what they really are, and to make new choices about how you want to live your life.
- A belief system that enables you to have a larger perspective about the challenges you face so you can put them into their proper context and respond (not react) accordingly.
- A true, balanced understanding of yourself -- including your "light" and your "darkness" -- that frees you from self-judgment and allows you to draw on your true strengths (which are very often rooted in the "darkness" we find so scary and lacking).
- An understanding of the proper time to engage the resources your inner critic has to offer you. You have to know WHEN to listen to your inner critic, because there IS a time and a place to listen to that voice.
Most of us just simply do it at the wrong time (and without the proper rules in place).
